Establishing Safe Conditions
Provides training in the precautions that need to be taken to establish safe conditions before work begins, the actions needed to maintain these throughout the work, and the responsibilities of supervisors and persons in charge of the work.
Learning content and assessment questions cover:
- Hazards The dangers inherent in the equipment used to generate electricity, such as High and Low Voltage electricity; water, steam or other fluids at high temperature and pressure; toxic or hazardous chemicals; and flammable or asphyxiating gases. The hazards from the industrial environment and the tasks being carried out, which could include hot work; slips, trips and falls; manual handling and access to and from the work area.
- Safety From The System The requirements and responsibilities to achieve the isolation and other precautions necessary before an item of equipment can be released for work, and the need to undertake separate training in this area.
- Work environment and task Ensuring, before work begins, that there is safe access to and egress from the point of work; a safe place of work; and that safe methods of work will be used. The correct information, tools and equipment must be available; and persons competent to do the work. It identifies the actions needed to maintain these conditions throughout the work.
- Typical Work Situation The application of the principles to a typical work situation that involves changing a valve in a section of pipework. It includes references to the need for risk assessments and method statements.
